After
doing so well at the
Academy Awards, Olivia
demanded better acting roles.
The studio, treating Olivia, and
all actors as though they were
the property of the studio,
punished her assertiveness
by placing her on suspension
for six months. In addition,
when her contract with the
studio was up, Warner said
Olivia would have to make
up the lost time because of
the suspension. Olivia was
furious and sued the studio,
and act which was completely
unheard of for that time.
In a landmark decision, the
court ruled for Olivia, saying she
didn't have to make up the time she
had spent on suspension, and that
in addition, all performers would
henceforth be limited to a seven
year contract. Further, if they were
given a suspension period by the
studio, it would be included as part
of their seven year contract. This
ruling has become known as "The
De Havilland Law", and was the
first step in giving actors power
over their own careers.
