Daniel Boone's was a Col. in the Virginia Millitia.
His Autobiography was published
on his 50th birthday, in 1794 and titled;
"The Adventures of Colonel Daniel Boon" (no "e")
Published by John Filson. It was later
re-published by George Imlay in 1793.
Daniel established a route used by thousands in
the first Westward migration. He was captured by
the Shawnee Indians and adopted by
Chief Black Fish as his son.
He escaped by trekking 160 miles on foot
in four days.
At least two movies were made about his life;
"Daniel Boone", in 1936
and "Daniel Boone, The Trailblazer", in 1956

and my ancestor, Margaret McGriff, are

Meriwether Lewis was born in Albemarle, VA, on 18 Aug 1774.
His father died when he was just an infant and his mother
and stepfather raised him on a 1,000 acre plantation located only
about 10 miles from Monticello. Thomas Jefferson and
(Meriwether Lewis are half 15th cousins through the common
ancestor, Edward I Plantagenet.) Lewis joined the Army in
1794 and served six years in the Frontier. He was promoted
to Captain in 1800. In 1801 He was appointed by President
Jefferson to be his Personal Secretary. Years later, President
Jefferson wrote of Lewis that he was brave, prudent, habituated
to the woods and familiar with Indian manners and character."
Lewis was the leader of the famed "Lewis and Clark Expidition",
consisting of 33 members which explored the West, all the
way to the Pacific Ocean. He kept good records
of the people, animals, and plants he found along the way. His
journey took a number of years to complete, but for his
outstanding work, President Jefferson awarded him $1,228,
plus 1,600 acres of land, and in 1808 appointed him to be the
Governor of the Louisiana Territory. In 1809 as Lewis was
travelling to Washington, he died a violent and mysterious
death in a tavern about 70 miles from Nashville, TN. Whether
he committed suicide, as Jefferson believed, or he was
murdered, as his family maintained, still remains
unknown, even to this day.
