2) MARK ANTHONY DEWOLF 1726-1793
(Sarah Elizabeth Rose's 4th Cousin
five times removed)
2nd Great Grandson of Balthazar DeWolf

Mark Anthony DeWolf was the first
to settle in Bristol, and is the
common ancestor of all the
DeWolfs of Rhode Island.

He lived in Bristol, Rhode Island,
and the neighboring township of
Swansea. From the home of his
father in Guadaloupe, Mark Anthony
was brought to Bristol RI, by Capt.
Simmeon Potter of that town. Some
kindred tie may have existed between
Mark Anthony's grandmother
Margaret Potter and Capt. Simeon
Potter. Mark Anthony received his
educationn in a French school and
spoke several languages. He became
Capt. Potter's Secretary, in which
capacity he sailed with him on a
number of voyages.

At age 18, Mark Anthony married
his cousin Abigail Potter. They met
and courted at her home "Hopestill
Potter" on the Southeast corner of
Hope and Church Streets where in
1720, his son Simeon was born.
Hopestill Potter was burned by the
British in 1775.

Less than four months after marrying,
Mark Anthony was sailing out on the
Privateer Prince Charles of Lorraine,
commanded by his friend and brother
in law, Captain Sim Potter. War had
been declared between Great
Britain and France, and The Prince
Charles of Lorraine was surprising
the settlement of Oyapoc in French
Guiana. The account of this
remarkable naval engagement is
preserved in a spirited letter of the
Jesuit Father Fauque, translated and
published by Bishop Kip. He states
that Mark Anthony was both First
Officer and Capt. Potter's Clerk.

3) CAPTAIN GEORGE DEWOLF 1778-1844

(son of Charles and nephew of Captain Jim)

"There was not a more dashing
man in the state (RI) than George
DeWolf. He had wide black eyes
and long lashes, a romantic flood
of dark hair which swept, in the
manner of Lord Byron's over
his ears to the edge of his stock,
chiseled nose, a thin-lipped mouth
and a small pointed chin.

George was the oldest son of Charles,
who had been the oldest son of Mark
Antony. Unlike his uncles, George
never went to sea.

In 1803, when he was only
twenty-four,
he bought the slave brig Minerva
from Collins. In 1804, he owned
a share in the Juno. During the
four years of Charleston's open
port, he owned the slaver
Charlotte, named for his wife
Charlotte Goodwin. On one of
her voyages to Africa, her first
officer went berserk from the
heat and threatened to shoot
Captain Sabens. When
George heard the news, he
sent orders to confine the
mutineer on bread and water
in the lazaret for the whole
stretch of the Middle Passage
and the return to Bristol.

Unlike his relatives, George continued
to trade in slaves after 1808. In 1809 he
bought the slave ship Monticello,
the Brigantine Rambler
and the Schooner Eliza, all
from Captain Jim. In 1810, from their
profit in a single year of the outlawed
slave trade, he had Russell Warren
build him a house on Hope Street which
out shone his Uncle William's on
Poppasquash, and his Uncle Jim's at
the Mount. George was now the
wealthiest man in RI second
only to his Uncle James.
Although George was just the
right age for service
in the national Army, he
remained in Bristol with the militia
through the War of 1812. When George
went bankrupt he evaded his creditors
by sneaking away in the middle of the
night and fleeing to the family's Plantations
in Cuba.
