MAMA'S FACE
MAMA'S
FACE
I saw Mama’s
face tonight in the setting sun
the red streaks of her hair flowing
across the sky
and felt her kiss me gently on
my cheek
and heard her say I love
you son
Was it the wind which brought
the chills?
Just air current brushing my
cheek?
My own hair was standing out
on my neck
as my heart thumped loud enough
to hear
My horse and I both spooked
at the same time and I just know
we weren’t alone in the meadow
tonight
I tried to sleep but couldn’t
I never cried before
not since I grew up anyway and
must say
I was glad there were no eye
witnesses
to stand and gawk and spread
rumors later
I’m as sane as sane can be
and I know Mama’s here with me
looking young and pretty as when
I was a kid
And it doesn’t matter that I’m
eighty three
Why did you come, Mama?
Why am I suddenly filled with
peace?
All my cares are drifting far
away
blurring into pink streaks of
evening sky
