ODE TO ZACHARY CHICKEN

Chicken rescued from the cooking pot
Our family eat you – we would not!
Because you’ve brought such joy to me
And to our entire family

three large silver pots each with a chicken inside.

My children swear you sing and dance
I hear their shrieks of sheer delight
As they accompany you on piano
Playing late into the night

I snap the photos – you’re so notorious
Though cleaning after you is quite laborious
It’s a fair trade since happiness you bring
To the lucky few who get to hear you sing

Today, one feather’s all I found
When looking for you round our grounds
A single, lonely, feather’s all
No little dance, no little call


a feather falling.

Our neighbors say a chicken hawk
Flew by and carried you in flight
But I recall with remorse and fright
The pot of stew they ate last night
