Stepping
out
of
the
horizon
mother and daughter going nowhere
treading barefoot across an
endless sea of sand
Daughter with basket balanced
atop
her head imitating her mother who
with earthen jar centered hurries
to wherever
always ready to leave/ they
are masters of departure
vanishing without notice
or trace

Feet polished to bronze and
kept smooth with
sand pumice of
every step.
mother and daughter fading
farther
away until
all that’s
left is a vague silhouette
of what once was.
As without hesitation the silhouette
fades mysteriously back into
the horizon
from whence it came
