Fourth Duke of Devonshire (1756-1757)
And British Prime Minister

William Cavendish held his position
during a very tumultous period in history.
It was in 1756 that Britain declared war on
France, fighting on two fronts in India
and North America.
In addition, 1756 also happened to be the
beginning of the Seven Years' War
(1756-63) which was a widening of the
conflict between Britain and France, which
included Prussia and Hanover on the British
side against Austria, Russia, Saxony, Spain
and Sweden with France.

10)  Samuel Pomeroy Colt 1852-1921

searching for a photo of samuel Pomeroy colt

Attorney General of Rhode Island 1882-1885

line purple animated sunburst

Samuel Pomeroy Colt, "Pom" 1852-1921
Samuel was named for his fathers brother, Samuel Colt,
inventor of the Colt 45 Revolver, whom he lived with
after the death of his father when he was only three
years old. He stayed with his Uncle for ten years, until his
mother, a descendant of the DeWolf mercantile family of
Bristol, Rhode Island, returned to Bristol to live in the
DeWolf family's ancestral home, now know as Linden
Place. (I believe the DAR now owns Linden Place.)
As an adult, he was an entrepreneur, politician, lawyer,
and philanthropist. He was the son of Christopher and
Theodora Goujand DeWolf Colt. His father was a dry
goods merchant in New York City and Connecticut.
He attended the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT), and graduated from Columbia Law
School. In 1877 he was quickly admitted to both, the
New York, and the Rhode Island bars. Samuel worked as
aide-de-camp to Rhode Island Governor Henry Lippitt
where he held the honorary rank of "colonel,"
a  title he kept throughout his life. He
served on the Governor's staff until 1877. He was
elected to the Rhode Island House of Representatives from
Bristol, where he tried to regulate child labor and the right
of women to hold and inherit property. He was a major
financial contributor to the Republican Party.
He served as Assistant Attorney General,
then was elected Rhode Island's Attorney General,
where he remained for seven years. He vigorously
prosecuted liquor law violations, and murders, often
leading the prosecution of these cases personally. In his
private legal practice, he served as executor for the
estates of Cornelius J. Vanderbilt, and Ambrose
Burnside, former Rhode Island governor and Civil War
General. In 1886 Samuel founded the Industrial Trust
Company, a banking corporation which has grown into
today's Fleet/Norstar Corporation, which became the
largest bank in Rhode Island and one of the largest in
New England. He also held the position of receiver for
the bankrupt National Rubber Company which was located
in his hometown of Bristol. He merged National India
Rubber with a number of other rubber companies to
form U.S. Rubber, the forerunner of the present UNIROYAL
Corporation. He served as president of U.S. Rubber from
1901 to 1918 and oversaw its growth into one of the largest
corporations in the world. In addition to Industrial Trust
and U.S. Rubber, Samuel had a major financial or
personal interest in railroads, lumber, public utilities, and
publishing. He served on the boards of directors of more
than forty companies and was one of the wealthiest men in
the country. His 400 acre waterfront farm, North Farm, at
Poppasquash Point in Bristol was open to the public during
his lifetime and after his death this farm was left to the state
of Rhode Island and represents the bulk of the area now
known as Colt State Park. Samuel married Elizabeth
Bullock of Bristol in 1881, and the couple had three
sons. Samuel Pomeroy Colt, Jr., died of a viral
infection at the age of nine. Russell Griswold
and Roswell Christopher. Russell achieved some
notoriety when in 1909
he married the Actress, Ethel Barrymore.
Samuel Pomeroy Colt died of complications from
a stroke on August 13, 1921, at his beloved Linden
Place in Bristol. His passing was front page news in
the newspapers of the state and his funeral was attended
by major political and business figures from around the
country. In his will, he provided for each of his two
surviving sons and their families through trusts established
in their names, yet by creating a tontine will he left the
bulk of his estate to his last surviving grandchild
without knowing who that would be.
