Zachary served in the War of 1812 where
he distinguished himself in the defense
of
Fort Harrison. He led the First Infantry
Regiment in the Black Hawk War,
participated in the Seminole Wars,
was
promoted to Brigadier General
and made Commander of the Military
Dept. of the Southwest. He
occupied the
Republic of Texas and defended
it in the
Mexican invasion. He was
awarded a
gold medal and promoted to Major
General.

President Hiram Ulysses
Grant
(18th US President 1869-1877)
(It
is frequently said that
Grant's middle name was "Simpson."
It was not. His middle name was
"Ulysses" and he admitted
that the "S" in his name stood for nothing.)
In 1843
he graduated from West Point as a commissioned
second lieutenant.
From 1846-1848 he fought
in the Mexican
War as a Quarter Master. In 1854 he
resigned his commission
to work on his 60 acre farm in St.
Louis, and sell real
estate. It is said, he was very bored with
this life. In
1860 he moves to IL and begins working at his
fathers leather
shop. In June of 1861 he was Appointed a
Colonel in the 21st
IL Infantry. Just two months later, in
Aug of 1861, he was
Appointed Brigadier General. Grants
first engagement came
on Nov 17th at the Battle of
Belmont, where his horse
was shot out from beneath him.
On Feb 16, 1862 Grant
took Fort Donelson, TN, which was
the first Union victory
of strategic importance in the
war. During the
period of May 12-May 17, 1963, Grant
defeated the enemy at
Jackson, Champion Hill, and Big
Black River. On Jul
4th, 1863, He's victorious at the
surrender of Vicksburg,
in one of the greatest military
campaigns in history.
After several additional victories,
Grant is commissioned
a Lieutenant General on March
9th of 1864, by Lincoln.
Then only three days later, he
is appointed General
in chief of all U.S. Armies.
In May of 1864 at The Battle of Cold Harbor, Grant
lost 7,000 men
in one hour against General Lee's forces.
He admits later
this was his searing blunder. What
saved him afterward
was only his ability to get
reinforcements and
quickly. Grants greatest hour
came on Apr 9, 1865,
when General Lee surrendered
to him in Virginia,
bringing an end to the Civil War.
In 1868 Grant
was nominated for President of the US.
He did no campaigning
on his behalf.
He was elected and
served from 1869-1877.
